MFE Magnesium for Europe

MFE Magnesium For Europe GmbH was founded in 2022 with the ambition of establishing a clean, green and globally competitive primary magnesium production in Europe. The project is underpinned by an actively mined, high-quality dolomite deposit in Bosnia-Herzegovina, over which MFE has majority control and secured access. Magnesium is recognised as a critical and strategic raw material, with applications across a wide range of industries and growing importance to Europe’s industrial and strategic resilience. MFE is positioned to become the only near-term primary magnesium producer in Europe, offering European and US industrial customers an opportunity to significantly reduce their current dependence on Chinese supply. MFE is approaching completion of the planning phase for its proposed production facility in Wilhelmshaven, Germany. The project will employ an innovative aluminothermic production process that converts dolomite into four marketable products: magnesium, calcium carbonate, Al-Mg spinel, and liquid CO?/dry ice. The process is designed to generate zero process waste while maximising the value extracted from the raw material. The production process will be powered exclusively by green energy and is expected to achieve a carbon footprint of less than 2.3 mt of CO2 per 1 mt of magnesium produced. This represents a reduction of more than 90% compared with conventional magnesium production based on the Pidgeon process. MFE is a privately held company, and all development activities to date—including technological validation and the securing of long-term access to the required raw material—have been financed privately. The company is now preparing to commence the structuring and origination of approximately USD 175 million in project financing required for implementation. The envisaged financing package will combine debt financing, government grants and equity investment from strategic industry partners and financial investors.
