Dr Andrew Heap is the Chief of the Minerals, Energy and Groundwater Division at Geoscience Australia.
Dr Heap has 22 years of professional experience in leading geoscience research as a senior leader in Geoscience Australia, with a track record of successfully delivering energy and mineral, carbon capture, utilisation and storage, marine geoscience and groundwater programs. As a geographer and marine geologist, Dr Heap has responsibility for leading programs to build a national prospectus of Australia’s mineral, energy and groundwater resources using geological information. Key outcomes are to stimulate exploration investment that results in new resource discoveries, support Australia’s transition to a lower carbon economy, and help secure Australia’s water resources for sustainable use. Dr Heap represents Australia in the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) as Council Member of the Australia–New Zealand IODP Consortium and is the Australian Government’s representative on the Geoscience Working Group under the National Cabinet Energy Reform Committee.
Dr Heap graduated with 1st class Hons in Geography from the University of Auckland (New Zealand) in 1996 and completed his PhD in Earth Sciences at James Cook University in 2000. He has published over 100 scientific and technical papers.
