Dr. Kate Thornton is the Chief Executive Officer of ABMEC, the Association for British Mining Engineering & Consultancy, where she leads the UK’s premier trade body representing the global interests of the British mining supply chain.
With a career spanning the chemical industry and professional membership organizations, Dr. Thornton brings a unique blend of technical expertise, strategic leadership, and a passion for sustainable development in mining and engineering.
A Chartered Engineer and Chartered Scientist, Dr. Thornton is a Fellow of both the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3) and the Women’s Engineering Society. She served as President of IOM3 from 2023 to 2024, becoming the youngest person to hold the role, and currently chairs its Board of Trustees.
Throughout her career, Dr. Thornton has championed innovation, safety, and environmental responsibility in engineering. Her leadership at ABMEC is focused on promoting British excellence in mining technology and consultancy on the global stage, with a strong emphasis on collaboration, education, and sustainable practices.
