Tom Peacock

Professor Tom Peacock is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Director of the Environmental Dynamics Laboratory (ENDLab), where he leads pioneering research on environmental fluid dynamics, physical oceanography, and the interaction between industrial activities and ocean systems. His work focuses on understanding complex ocean processes and developing science-based solutions to global environmental challenges.

A globally recognized expert in fluid mechanics and ocean systems, Professor Peacock has spent more than two decades conducting international field research in regions including the Arctic Ocean, the South China Sea, the Western Pacific, and the Clarion-Clipperton Zone. His research combines advanced modeling, laboratory experiments, and field observations to better understand ocean transport processes, marine ecosystems, and the environmental impacts of emerging ocean industries.

Professor Peacock is particularly known for his leadership in research on deep-sea mining and ocean-based climate solutions. Over the past decade, he has led major scientific initiatives examining sediment plume dynamics, environmental monitoring, and the ecological implications of deep-seabed resource development. He has also been actively involved in studies related to ocean carbon dioxide removal and marine carbon management strategies.

Since 2017, he has served as MIT’s representative to the International Seabed Authority and currently contributes as a Scientific Expert to international efforts focused on developing environmental standards and best practices for deep-sea activities. He is also a Fellow of the American Physical Society and recipient of the National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award in Physical Oceanography.
